The weekend retreat in West Virginia with Susan Feller was filled with relaxation, rug hooking, walks in the woods, more rug hooking, catching up with old friends and making new ones, followed by more rug hooking and a final “throw down” of rugs on the front porch of the lodge on Sunday afternoon.
I spoke a bit on Friday afternoon about my design process. I explained that with my background in graphic art, I tend to see design images as graphic posters. My designs are simple and well suited to rug hooking. I used Lucy’s Fairy Village rug as my example and told how it came to be [see my former blog entry, Lucy’s Fairy Village]. I also showed my Star Barn rug, which can be seen on my SHOP page, as another example of how I “see” images. Nancy Parcels kindly brought her beautiful pictorial Star Barn rug to illustrate the difference in styles.
Susan Feller spent the weekend helping us with color planning and choices. She showed many beautiful examples of her work. We drove to her amazing home for dinner Saturday night-- a home that is filled with art created by Susan and her husband, Jim Lilly. We enjoyed looking at everything, visited her studio, and then ate a delicious meal prepared by Jim.
During the weekend, there was a lot of sharing of ideas and creative help between the entire group. Lori LaBerge was there and did a presentation on plein air rug hooking. When my new studio space is finished, I hope to join in that group.
Thanks to Susan for another great retreat. With all the beauty down there, I’m already planning next year's trip.
