Before and After: Smoked Bass

I occasionally get a request for a commissioned rug design.  Sometimes I’m asked for just the pattern on linen for the person to hook and other times I’m asked to design and hook a special rug for someone.  My brother and sister-in-law, who live on Cape Cod, requested that I design and hook a rug for their home.

I was excited about doing this, and designs started popping into my head.  I could do their dogs, their boat on the water, the beautiful Cape Cod scenery that is all around them.  I discussed my ideas with them and asked them to get back to me with their decision.

After a few days of waiting, I received an email with their request.  They wanted a striped bass sitting on an Adirondack chair, smoking a cigar.  A pause ensued while I took this all in.  Then I replied on the email, “Are you serious?!”  They were.

So, I took a deep breath and began to think about this.  Just how does a fish sit?  Where will this cigar smoking fish be situated?  On a patio?  Next to their swimming pool?  Under a tree?

Then it hit me.  I had been doing a number of rugs in my Beach Series, so this would be yet another one.  As long as the design would be humorous, why not have the fish sitting on the beach looking out to sea?

This design has been a popular one and certainly elicits many laughs.

Final reminder:  There is one week left to order a pattern during the month of June and receive a free Stash Saver Sachet!

There’s a lot of beauty out there, and it’s all in the eye of the beholder
