Today I’ll be dropping off five hooked rugs at the Perry County Fair. They’re not all my rugs. One is mine and the rest belong to Magdalenas, Gail, Emily and Debra. We had a bit of difficulty coming up with rugs to enter into the Fair this year, because the Magdalena Rug Hookers’ A-list rugs are all on display at the Landis House in Newport, PA until the beginning of October.
This year the 44th annual Perry County Fair will be filled with the usual things that we have come to expect and love about this true old-time country fair. From Tuesday, August 19th through Saturday, August 23rd, you can stroll the midway; ride the many rides; eat just about anything you want from funnel cakes, sausage and peppers, hot dogs, fries, fresh-squeezed lemonade, pizza, sno-cones, cotton candy, etc, etc.
I’ll be there on Friday evening with my brother. We always have the BBQ chicken dinner prepared by the capable women and men of the Oliver Grange. These folks put out a fantastic different dinner each night of the Fair.
After our dinner, we will visit the barns with all the many animals: sheep, goats, cattle, and rabbits. I think most of these animals are 4-H or FFA [Future Farmers of America] projects by the youngsters in the area. Each animal is groomed and obviously well cared for by its proud owner.
Another stop that we will definitely make is to visit the Fancy House. Here one can view produce, canned goods, pies, cakes, handmade quilts, hooked rugs, crocheted and knitted items, antique farm implements, and on and on. It’s fun to see who won the ribbons. I forget how many hooked rugs we entered last year, but each one had a ribbon. I hope we do as well this year.
I love Perry County PA and its behind-the-times feel. I couldn’t think of a better place in which to live. If you’re in the area, come out this week and spend some time at the Fair.
There’s a lot of beauty out there ,and this week it’s at the Perry County Fair!
