Introduction to Rug Hooking.

Although I’ve been designing and hooking rugs since 2006, I picked up a copy of a new book by Kris Miller titled, Introduction to Rug Hooking: a beginner’s guide to tools, techniques, & materials [copyright 2015 Stackpole Books].  Even with years of experience, I believe that one can always learn something from taking a workshop or reading a book on this wonderful topic.

Kris Miller must have the patience of a saint to be so meticulous in her book.  This just might be the only book needed by someone looking to take up the art and craft of rug hooking.  Starting off with a bit of rug hooking history, Kris then delves into all of the necessary tools and materials a rug hooker needs to get started.  Hooks, frames, foundation cloth and cutters.  Then on to the beautiful world of wool!

I’m so impressed with the patterns included in the book.  Each one is designed to teach a specific lesson and builds on the lesson from the previous one.  As I said before, Kris is meticulous in guiding the beginner along.  I know Kris teaches rug hooking workshops and is comfortable with a more hands-on approach, but I do believe that anyone can learn how to start on the exciting journey of rug hooking by reading her new book.

Not sure how to hook points, curves, or lettering?  Curious how to transfer a design to the foundation cloth? Want to try your hand at creative hooking techniques and proddy? Need to know how to finish your rug after the hooking is done?  Kris’ photos and descriptions lead you through the entire process.

There’s a lot of beauty out there, and with Kris Miller’s book, Introduction to Rug Hooking, you can make some for yourself!
