If you’re a rug hooker, who loves primitive rug designs, you will want to pick up a copy of Cynthia Smesny Norwood’s new book, Primitive Hooked Rugs for the 21st Century. [Copyright 2015 by Stackpole Books and presented by Rug Hooking Magazine.]
Cynthia begins her book with illustrations of a challenge she gave to some talented fellow rug hookers. Observing copyright laws, she made patterns from antique rugs in her extensive collection and sent them to this group of rug hookers with a few stipulations: they couldn’t see the original rug; they could choose any value of background they wished; they could make a few changes in the design as they saw fit; and the finished rug must look primitive.
The book then has colored photos of the antique rugs followed by the newly hooked rug adaptations. The results are beautiful!
In subsequent chapters, Cynthia shares a wealth of information about what makes a rug “primitive”; what kind of wool to use; how to select the color and value for the background and how to make the background an interesting and exciting part of your rug; and the importance of borders and binding. Her information is in-depth without feeling overwhelming.
Primitive Hooked Rugs for the 21st Century is filled with colored photos to illustrate all of the techniques as well as many of Cynthia Norwood’s beautiful finished primitive hooked rugs. There are seven line-drawn patterns at the back of the book to enlarge and put on linen, so you can create your own primitive rug.
You can also read an article by Cynthia about her new book in the March-April-May 2015 issue of Rug Hooking Magazine.
Primitive Hooked Rugs for the 21st Century is an excellent follow up to Cynthia’s previous book, Creating an Antique Look in Hand-Hooked Rugs [Copyright 2008 by Stackpole Books and presented by Rug Hooking Magazine]. The last time I looked, this book was still available through Amazon.com.
There’s a lot of beauty out there and in the primitive rugs of Cynthia Norwood!
